    The National ICT4AD Consultative Pocess


Dialogue with the Paramount Chiefs of the Western Region in conjunction with the Institute of African Studies, Legon

The National ICT Policy and Plan Development Committee dialogued with the Paramount Chiefs from the Western Region on the 24th of October 2002 as part of the National Consultative exercise aimed at developing an ICT-driven socio-economic development policy and plan.

A presentation was made by Professor Clement Dzidonu Chairman of the National ICT Policy and Plan Development Committee on the topic: ‘The Ghana ICT for Accelerated Development Process: The Challenge of Our Time’. A supporting presentation was also made by Dr. Nii Narku Quaynor, a member of the UN ICT Task Force.

Some of the key Comments & Contributions

  • Ghanaians were encouraged to make use of the available Human Resource no matter how limited it might seem.
  • There is the need to address the problem of lack of appropriate Telecommunications infrastructure that must exist for ICT to be effective in enhancing the growth of the country’s socio-economic development.
  • The Chiefs urged the Committee to find a way of curbing the negative side of the Internet to protect young people from abusive materials.
  • The Government should make it a priority to develop the rural areas along side the Urban centers; the necessary infrastructure must be deployed in the rural areas to aid the Agricultural Sector.
  • The Chiefs urged all Traditional Rulers to champion the cause of ICT in their various regions and districts and create the awareness for using ICTs for the socio-economic development of the country.
